Pharmacy Technicians function in various areas of the pharmacy, e.g. inpatient pharmacy, outpatient pharmacy, chemotherapy infusion center, emergency department, surgery, wards, various storage areas, offices, and other patient care areas. Pharmacy technicians provide various technical support services within the pharmacy department. The Pharmacy Technician typically carries out the full range of technical support and customer service functions described below. The incumbent may be required to perform some or all of the functions below, however, the relative percentages of time spent performing each specific function varies daily with the area of administrative assignment.

  • Sterile Product Compounding to include Hazardous drugs
  • Unit Dose Medication Management
  • Controlled Substance Dispensing and Accountability
  • Automatic Replenishment/Ward Stock - Distribution and Inspections
  • Procurement and Inventory Management
  • Automation - Operation and Maintenance of automated equipment
  • Participation in quality assurance and process improvement activities
  • Provides technical support to Clinical Pharmacists and other Medical Center Staff
  • Assumes role of Outpatient Pharmacy Technician when necessary Work Schedule:The Providence VA Medical Center is an acute care facility operating 24 hours a day 7 days a week. While most tour of duty are scheduled during the day, the possibility of working evenings, nights, and weekends does exist. Shift changes will be considered based on patient and facility needs. Knowledge of pharmacy information systems. AND In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 1. Ability to solve problems and make recommendations, e.g., troubleshoot operational problems and refer to appropriate action. 2. Knowledge of the operation and care of automated equipment. 3. Knowledge of, and ability to follow, written instructions for compounding with aseptic technique for hazardous materials such as oncology agents. 4. Knowledge, and ability to perform, compounding with aseptic technique for routine sterile products. 5. Knowledge of policies and procedures for inventory management in specialized areas such as emergency carts. 6. Knowledge of the computerized prescription process demonstrated by the availability to input prescriptions and medication orders.

Physical Requirements: Moderate lifting (15-44 pounds) and moderate carrying (15-44 pounds), reaching above shoulder with use of both fingers and hands, prolonged walking and standing with both legs, near and far vision with the ability to distinguish basic colors, and accurate hearing with emotional and mental stability.
