Brown University Senior Associate Director for Strategic Initiatives in Providence, Rhode Island
The Senior Associate Director supports the Senior Director in the implementation of department-wide initiatives including strategic plan goals/action items, departmental DIAP commitments, departmental assessment, and high-level analysis of administrative processes and workflows. This work includes internal and external communications as well as maintaining partnerships and communications with key stakeholders. This position communicates effectively with department staff, maintaining knowledge of department, division, and campus-wide initiatives. This individual will work closely with the Senior Director, the Associate Director for Operations, and the Associate Director for Programs to effectively coordinate cross-functional projects between operations and the residential experience. One critical element of this is designing and directing a leadership development program for over 400 student leaders within the department. This individual will also conduct hearings in the non-academic student conduct process, and participates in a campus-wide, administrator on-call system. The Senior Associate Director provides leadership and guidance for the department in the absence of the Senior Director and represents the Senior Director at institutional and divisional meetings, as necessary (e.g. Threat Assessment, Campus Life Executive Group, etc).
Master’s degree in higher education, education, or related field required.
Minimum of seven years related experience in higher education/student affairs administration including administrative experience in residential, educational or similar organizations required.
Four to six years’ experience supervising staff
Demonstrated record of educational program assessment (preferably in a university setting).
Active engagement with current best practices and an awareness of emerging issues in higher education, student housing, and student affairs;
Evidence of creative strategic thinking and proven ability to work in a dynamic environment, to facilitate organizational change, and to improve organizational performance;
Evidence of cultural competence and inclusiveness; sensitivity to and understanding of diverse perspectives that students and staff bring to their work, including those of academic, socioeconomic, culture, race and ethnicity, ability, gender, sexuality, and intersectional identities;
Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to exercise a high degree of diplomacy and discretion required;
Strong collaborative energy, demonstrated capacity as a fair and respectful leader, and proven ability to provide effective guidance to other professional, support, and student staff;
Integrity, sound judgment, and the ability to make difficult decisions;
Strong written and oral communication skills, and computer literacy.
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a diverse staff and student body.
Effective communication skills. Ability to write and make oral presentations to groups. Strong computing skills. Demonstrated ability and willingness to learn and use new communication approaches and tools.
